Navigating your orthodontic journey requires care and knowledge, especially when faced with unexpected issues. Whether you are wearing braces or Invisalign® aligners, knowing how to handle minor setbacks can significantly improve your comfort and prevent complications. Our orthodontic first aid guide is here to help you manage common concerns at home, ensuring your path to a perfect smile remains smooth.

Common Braces Issues:

  • Loose or Broken Brackets: Secure a loose bracket with orthodontic wax to avoid irritation. If a bracket breaks, save any pieces and contact our office for advice.
  • Protruding or Broken Wires: Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently nudge the wire back into place. If cutting the wire becomes necessary, use a clean pair of nail clippers sanitized with alcohol, and apply orthodontic wax to the end.
  • General Soreness: Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater or take an over-the-counter pain reliever if necessary. Chewing sugar-free gum can also help reduce soreness and adjust your mouth to the braces.

Common Clear Aligners Issues:

  • Misplaced or Lost Aligners: Immediately switch to your previous set of aligners to maintain your current position and contact us for a replacement. Keep wearing the previous set until the new ones arrive to prevent any setbacks.
  • Discomfort or Irritation: If your aligners cause any areas of irritation, gently smooth the edge of the aligner with a clean nail file or use orthodontic wax to cover the irritating spot.
  • Cleaning Your Aligners: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with water and a mild soap or detergent to clean your aligners. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.

General Tips

  • Oral Hygiene: Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing after every meal. This prevents food particles from getting trapped, reducing the risk of cavities and infections.
  • Eating Habits: With braces, avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods that can damage your appliances. For Invisalign clear aligner wearers, always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water.
  • Regular Checkups: Keep up with your scheduled appointments. They allow us to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
